Our Story
UGO is a South African Non-profit organisation founded by Mr Talithani Tshitwamulomoni at the University of Venda's School of Environmental Sciences. The organisation grew from a simple tree-planting initiative into a dynamic force for environmental change globally. UGO was started to provide leadership in environmental awareness through community engagement and has blossomed into a comprehensive organisation tackling a wide range of environmental issues including biodiversity management, agriculture, climate change, waste management, and pollution.
Since our early days, UGO has evolved into a driving force in environmental conservation. Our journey has taken us to schools, communities, and many areas across South Africa, where we actively promote environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and collaborative solutions. With the support of dedicated volunteers, researchers, and community members, we've launched initiatives that include tree planting, waste management education, climate resilience programs, and biodiversity protection.
One of our defining outreach initiatives, the Professor PH Omara Ojungu Outreach Programme, named in honour of environmental visionary Prof PH Omara-Ojungu, serves as the heart of our community work. This program embodies our belief that meaningful environmental change starts with educating and empowering people at the grassroots level. Through projects under the Omara Ojungu banner, we've planted thousands of trees, educated young people on climate issues, and partnered with local leaders to strengthen community-based environmental resilience.
Today, UGO continues to grow as a platform for positive environmental action. By combining education, research, and hands-on conservation work, we strive to inspire a deeper respect for nature and a commitment to protecting our planet for future generations. Our story is one of passion, resilience, and a collective vision for a greener, healthier South Africa.
